Union has greatly increased
its purchases of Argentine
grain. Sales picked up even
more after the military
government announced i
would not support the U.S.
grain embargo against
Moscow, according to trade
sources.

A little more than two
years ago, Soviet-Argentine
relations sank when an
Argentine destroyer fired
warning shots at two Soviet
fishing ships the government
accused of fishing in
Argentine waters.

Since then, relations
between the two countries
have improved markedly
with increasing commerce
that favors Argentina.

A Soviet engineering team
was chosen to conduct a
feasibility study for the
Parana Medio dam, a major
hydroelectric project called
the “Argentine Aswan.”

Last August a Russian
military mission visited
Buenos Aires for the first
time in recent history,
sparking a small uproar
among people concerned
about the growing
relationship.

During the visit, Army
Commander Roberto Viola
decorated Lt. Gen. Ivan
Braiko of the Soviet Defense
Ministry with a medal. Viola
said the Soviet mission
symbolized “the effective
consolidation of our existing
relations which are aimed at

overcoming the distances
