Salberg slams tanker routes Disappointment over U.S. President Carter's decision 10 import Alaskan oil to the U.S. via the Northern Tier route, involving the in- creased use of tankers down the B.C. coastline, was expressed by Capilano Liberal candidate Gerry Salberg in a recent campaign speech to Liberal sup- porters. Salberg said he was equally upset with Prime Minister Joe Clark's support for the Trans Northern route, which would = also mean additional tanker traffic. “Both routes call for extensive tanker traffic on our coast line and anybody who feels new regulations will stop a major spill is dreaming.” he said. He noted that Carter has not closed the door to reconsideration of the whole matter and promised that a new Liberal government will urge the U.S. to reassess the advantages of an overland Pipe line. “We must do everything in Our power to make sure that our coastline and beaches are never awash with crude oil,” he stated. Levesque condemns planned military manoeuvres VAL D'OR, Que. (UPC) - plan by the former Liberal government to hold military manoeuvres in Quebec during the referendum campaign was “the height of ridicule and cynicism.” Quebec Premier Rene Levesque said Monday. The Montreal French- language daily La _ Presse reported Monday Pierre Trudeau's government had planned io stage the largest military manoeuvres ever seen in Canada to coincide with Quebec's sovereignty- association referendum this spring. The paper said Prime Minister Joe Clark cancelled the plan because he feared it would trouble many Quebecers who might have viewed it as a tactic. Levesque condemned the Liberals for thinking they had Quebecers in their pocket. “If it is true it would have made the quasi-totality of Quebecers laugh at the same tame as it would have in- sulted them,” he said. “It 1s the height of mdicule and cynicism.” pressure ANIMEAL PET FOODS 1320 MARINE DRIVE N.
