BEFORE . BEGINNING any
remodeling project, think about
turing down the heat buildup in
your home during the hot summer
months to come.

If you're installing new win-
dows, the best defense against sun
is heat-reflecting or low-emissivity
windows, says Remodeling Ideas
magazine.

But even without new windows,
the following are same handy ways
to help keep homes cool.

Gi install a film on old windows.

One type of film — a window
tint = absorbs solar radiation; the
other — a reflective film —
reflects the sun's rays and is more
transparent than the window tint.

. Both should last at least 10 years.
i Insulate the attic.
88 Attach awnings.

Buy either ready-made fabric
awnings or aluminum models, or
build wood awnings that tic in with
your overall house scheme.

@ Attach outside sun screens.

Block the sun by covering win-
dows that receive direct sunlight
with screenings of bamboo, wood,
fiberglass, or polypropylene.

Craftsman style, with battered
porch walls, a heavy timber porch
gable sereen, and prominent cave
brackets.

Much of the charm of this home
is derived from the use of multi-
paned wood sash casement win-
dows and the wood detailing
around them, The squared bay win-
dow in the front is particularly
appealing.

This home was built at the same

time ‘as some of the earliest large -

olds its charm

hall in North Vancouver. The open-

month, Heritage day is Feb. 21.
