Smoke alarm alerts neighbor

A KITCHEN fire caused
smoke damage to a home
located at 1133 Keith Rad. at
1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb.

According to a West Vancouver

Fire Department spokesman, the
tire was caused by an overheated,
unattended pot left on a stove.

As acighbor heard a smoke
alarm, saw smoke coming from
the home and called the fire
department,

In what he catled the latest tax~
payer-funded yovernment — pro-
paganda, Mitchell said the finance
ministry is sending an eight-page,
full-color publication called
Budget 93: Choices and
Challenges to every household in
RC

He added that informed citizens
should not tolerate the govern-
ment’s claim on page one of the
publication that blames Ottawa
for the “NDP’s inability to reduce
the provincial deficit."’

“It’s a phony excuse and is
repeated throughout the docu-
ment,’’ said Mitchell.

He added that the provincial
government’s own statistics clearly
show federal traasfer payments
and grants have gone up every
year over the last 10 years, except
for slight reductions in the fiscal
years 1989-90 and 1990-91,

Although not reported in the
publication, projections for the
fiscal year 1992-93 show another
slight reduction in actual dollars
of just $38 million which, accord-
ing to Mitchell, provides no
justification at all for the ‘unex-
pected drastic cul’? complained
about by Clark.

“What bas happened is that Ot-
tawa’s dollar contributions have
remained stable while both the
former Social Credit government
and the present NDP administra-
tion have been unable to hold the
line on expenditures in all major
spending fields,’’ said Mitchell.

“Glen Clark calls it a cut in
federal funding. | call it a cut in
his credibility and a major disap-
pointment in Victoria's continuing
inability fo put a cap on the gov-
ernment's  expenditures,””

Earlier this month, Mitchell at-
tacked the provincial government
for what he said was Victoria's
inability and unwillingness to deal
with an ever-increasing mountain
of public debt.

said he will introduce a private
member's bill when the legislature
resumes sitting, The bill will re-
quire the provincial government to
balance its budget annually.

Mitchell, challenged Clark to
present to the legislature a detailed
plan of action committing the
government to not only balance
the budget but to address the
long-term public debt.
