8 - North Shore News — Sunday, September 3, 2000 mmigrants we Dear Editor: Counaiilor Douglas MacKay-Dunn of | North Vancouver District has shed a few tears over Executive Editor Tim Renshaw’s criticism of the district's Community Diversity Committee. (See Immigrants need help, Mailbox, Aug. 23.) The councillor wailed at length _ language.” about the immigrants” life and hard times. They have to vut up with “unfamiliar customs, different people and a peculiar They are “without power and protection” and are the targets of criminal ele- ments, ete. So he stands ready to do something about it. Is this guy living in the same country as the rese of us? Immigrants have as) much power and protection as any- one cise, and with the assis- tance of government approved, racially motivated, immigration —— associations, often a damned sight more. He seems not to know that large sums of taxpayers’ money oF —-— MAIL Box ptecie are spent on multiculturalism, and that diversi: committees will only add to the cost, But like all bleeding hearts, he is always willing to spend more on the approved projects of the politically correct. As tor immigrants being the targets of criminal ele- ments, so are the rest of us, Dear Editor: Re: The latest unbearable incident. The actions of the North Vancouver RCMP this week in ridding our neigh- bourhood of a “malicious” bear is another episode of this police depart- ment’s obvious non-program in dealing with wild animals within the urban core. There was no need to shoot this par- ticular bear. It was foraging for food and it had not gone after garbage. Instead of iding behind the half dozen cruisers, police should have spent their time not putting themselves in danger by standing near the bear, but to dispense with any gathering of any citi- zens gathered to watch the inevitable incident. Clear the streets, get in your cruisers and wait for a conservation officer with a tranquilizer. What or whom can the bear possibly harm if the streets are empty? Why, the bear wasn’t even looking at the officer when he blew it apart with a ing urban bears unbearable shotgun trom 10 feet. Ifa bear threatens, that's different, and the bear alarm kits are not a solu- tion in these cases, but the police department is extremely out of touch with these types of matters. All we hear is that they haven't been trained yet. Bears are a fact of life here on the North Shore. Get with it, quit killing. The majority of 3 adv ertise- ments clearly state “no pets,” or we are informed of i it once we call to enquire. It is sad that so many landlords make this sweeping condition without first meeting with potential tenants. We consider ourselves a community-oriented couple who make every effort to live harmoniously with our can always go back to the heavenly cultures they came trom. We are both employed, non-smokers and non-drinkers, yet we are turned away time after time because of our cat and our plans to adopt a dog. I realize screening poten- tial tenants can be challeng- ing, as 1 have experience in that area, but renting to peo- ple without pets does not guarantee clean, quiet, con- siderate tenants. All I ask is that landlords give pet owners a chance. Meet with us, interview us, meet our pets if it helps, but please, don’t judge us “not suitable” just because we're animal lovers.
