in Howell PHISH phans from around North America converged on GM Place Sept. 9 to see their favourite band kick off its 1999 fall tour. Bob Mackin News Reporter THEY came to Vancouver from Ohio, Nebraska and Rhode Island. New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario, too. Unlike most tourists, they weren't drawn by the mountain scenery, late summer weather or friendly citizens. Instead it was Phish that caused one of the city’s most unconventional conventions to happen on Sept. 9 And the del ed. A Phish concert isn’t simply about showing up, watching the band and going home. It’s about being a citizen ina spontancous community. When it came time to shift the scene to the “Garage,” some citizens came bearing sophisti- cated recording equipment with microphone stands high. A forest of mics stood behind the mixing console near the back of the flace; the band invites fans to tape and trade live recordings. Some burned tobacco and other leafy substances, as evidenced by the clouds of smoke that enveloped the arena. The record buttons were pressed in syne, as were the lighters, when singer/guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman and keyboardist Page McConnell appeared to a roar of applause. Together, the four musicians took the audience of 8,000 or so on a three-hour journey that ended close to midnight. Phish unveiled a new, instrumental song to en the first set. It was the first of three sumental premieres by the band. The sec- ond was a solo acoustic number by Anastasio. It suceceded an extended jam of the title track from last year’s Story of the Ghost album. The festive atmosphere extended to the concourse during intermis i tal and social action groups sought donations and offered ideas on a variety of causes. West Vancouver’s Jay King convened a meeting of the Phellowship, a support group for drug and alcohol-free Phish fans patterned after a similar group that followed the Grateful Dead. s didn’t leave disappoint- PHISH singer Trey Anastasio on the opening night of the fall tour.
