- A North Vancouver RCMP officer interviewed a man shortly after his arrest at
Bridgeman Park last Tuesday. The man was arrested and his Dodge van was
towed away from the North Vancouver park a short time later.

| Man robbed at bus | exchange

NORTH Vancouver RCMP are investigat-
ing an afternoon robbery at Phibbs
Exchange on May 10.

An 18-year-old man was waiting for his
bus ac the loop when he was approached by
mo males demanding money. One of the
men was wearing what appeared to be brass
knuckles while the other said he had a knife.
The duo took about $30 and left without far-
ther incident,

uspects ai¢ deseribed as being in their
mid to late teeny with one sporting long
brown hair while the other had short black
hair. The brass knuckles reportedly had spikes
on them.

Anyone with information about this inci-
dent js asked to call the North Vancouver
RCMP at 985-1311 and ask for Const. Ken
Cox, quoting file No. 98-15125.

deal with
bullies

Bullying is the most com-
mon form of violence
facing children today.
More and more, we see
stories in the news of
young people being
hurt, and even killed, by
buliies. The good news is
that we can do some-
thing about it.

Wher a child is repeat-
edly exposed to negative
actions on the part of
one or more children,
the child is being bullied.
This can involve being
pushed, punched,
kicked, ridiculed, taunt-
ed or threatened. Both
boys and girls bully, but

consulting with the artist.

use physical dominance
while girls use more ver-
bal forms of bullying. It’s
estimated that 30% to
40% af children are
involved in bullying at
some period, either as a
victim or bullies.

Family Services of the
North Shore has a pro-
gram to teach siudents
and parents how to deal
with bullying. These pro-
grams can protect young
people, give bullies other
ways of dealing with
problems and stop bully-
ing from escalating into
criminal behavior.

What can a child
do if he ur she is
being bullied?

If their schoo! has an anti-
bullying system, they should
use it to get help. If there is
No system at the school, they
can:

* tell an adult whe cares (par-
ent, friend or teacher.) The
adult should. intervene
immediately. .

* tell a friend what is happen-
ing and ask him or her to
help. It will be harder for a
bully to pick on two people.

* try to ignore the bully or say
“NO” firmly, then turn and
walk away. It’s hard for the
bully to go on bullying some-
one who won't stand still to
listen.

*try not ‘to show they are
upset or angry bullies love
this reaction.

* Don't fight back. Most bul-
lies are stronger or bigger
than their victims. Fighting
will make the situation worse
