Dear Editor:

On April 28 workers on Lonsdale were busy cutting apart
the road surface.

How many people noticed that the resulting thick sludge
was washing into three nearby storm drains — one displaving 2
yellow fish symbol? How many thought tc act?

One alert person called the Fisheries and Oceans Pollution
Hotline, then walked over to Wagyg Creek to check it our. The
sludge was discharging into the creek turning clear stream water
into opaque milk. In the meantime, enforcement officers
responded to the call and shur down the work site.

The offender responsitie for discharging noxious cc
nants into a fish-bearing stream, by failing to take mea
prevent runoff, was working on behalf of North Vancouver City.

registrations for Kindergarten to Grade Two pupils at

Almost all storm drains empty directly into our local streams
or into Burrard Inlet. Many substances flow ing into these drains
degrade water quality and harm habitat or kill fish.

Incidentally, the environmeatal management poli-
cies or protection bylaws in in North Vancouver City.
