On the other hand, the show was a broad-based music awards show, so the diversity of those in attendance cap- tured the spirit of the event. Bur it was strange when there were awkward silences berween pre- sentations and performances, microphones didn’t work, and there were bumps — and shuffles behind — the curtain _ reminiscent of an elementary school recital. But perhaps most strange of all, was that many of the artists recognized at the first broad music awards show in B.C. since the ’80s didn’t show up, and some didn’t even send a stand-in to accept their award for them. “My Sarah, how you've changed,” joked — Larry Henessey of CFOX’s The Larry and Willy Show, when Sarah McLachlan’s agent accepted her award for Female Vocalist of the Year. Then in a neat flip, ir was the band members who accepted the award for Engineer of the Year when Steven Drake won for his work on the album Nest, by the Odds. The band also won for Producer of the Year and Best Rock or Pop album with major distribu- tion. “We've always been the bridesmaids ar these things,” cracked Craig Northey, referring to the group as the Susan Lucet of music award shows. “We were 0 for 20 until about 10 minutes ago.” The audience gave stand- ing ovations to both Bill Henderson when he won the Volunteer Spirit Award, and to Bruce Allen, who won the Industry Builder Award. And despite the moments of awkwardness, the general atmosphere at the Pacific Music Industry Awards was one of pride. Master of ceremonies and West Vancouver resident Terry David Mulligan said it best at the beginning of the evening: “The town is humming.
