Van District 44 ENROLMENT IN North Vancou- ver School District 44 is up by 372 students for the 1994-95 schoo] year for a iotal of 16,519. NORTH VANCOUVER SGHOOL BOARD By Kevin Gillies The additional 372 full-time stu- dents represent a 2.3% overall increase over 1993-94's 16,146 full- time District 44 students. The largest enrolment increase was in secondary students. The number jumped from 6,057 last year to 6.292 this year — a 3.9% increase. Elementary school enrolment jumped 1.4% (from 10.089 to 10,227). Provincial funding for schoo! districts is based on their enrolment figures as of Sept. 30. The ministry forecasts an enrolment of 16,429 in District 44. At current enrolment levels, provincial funding for District 44 — based on its estimate of 90 fewer students — is approxi- mately $500,000 short. While it was not part of the esti- mates, superintendent of schools Dr. Robin Brayne said ESL (English as a Second Language) enrolment remained relatively static — around 2,000. District 44 has one of the top five ESL enrolments (by percentage of overall enrolment) in B.C.
