12 - Sunday, November 7, 1993 ~ North Shore News INQUIRING REPORTER CHOPPING THE choppers was the first order of the day for Prime Minister Jean Chretien. It is a promise that he made during his election campaign and it is a promise that he kept. The helicopter deal first became the subject of controversy due to iis expense — $4.8 billion for 43 EH-101 military helicopters. And now it is again the subject of controversy, this time largely due to the high-tech jobs that some say will be lost without the deal. However, the argument of lost jobs does not take inio account that the money saved by scrapping the deal al could be used to create other types of jobs in high-tech industries. Aside from the loss of jobs, another argument in support of the deal is that Canada needs to update its defence equipment. We can’t expect our military to con- tinually rely on decrepit and obsolete machines. But pacifists have a different perspective. To rephrase the famous quote made by the War Resisters League: ‘‘It will be a great day when our schools have «all the money they need and the military has to hold a bake sale to buy helicopters!’ Do you agree with Chietien’s plan to cancel the helicopter deal? Barbara Duffus Kristof Roomp North Vancouver Yes, because I think it’s a waste of money. The government is spending too much money already as it is, and they should start looking at ways to save money. Graham Knell North Vancouver _A lot of money will be wasted in doing this. His promise was jobs, . and yet this seems to be doing away with jobs. Canada needs to go into. high- tech jobs, thet’s where we're going to survive, Vi Roden West Vancouver Definitely. Joel Hamley North Vancouver It’s a tricky situation because a lot of us don’t know too much about it. It’s an expensive deal, but it might be expensive to cancel it. It’s hard to know what’s the best thing to do. North Vancouver Yes, purely from a_fi- nancial. point of view, I do agree. I’d like to see the money put. towards education.
