Job action

NORTH VANCOUVER teachers will continue their job
action next week to back contract demands with the
North Vancouver District 44 School Board (NVSB).

Members of the North Vancouver Teachers’ Associa-
tion (NVTA) voted 81% for strike action on Wednesday,
April 7. This week, teachers began a ‘“‘paper strike.”’
They did not perform paper work that is not part of dai-
ly teaching.

Boycotted paper work includes filling ovt report cards
(most report cards were issved before the strike action)
and compiling newsletters.

“We don't have any preset date for escalating beyond
this stage,"’ said NVTA president Linda Watson.

Teachers are still taking attendance, marking school
work ond planning classes. Watson said another strike
vote will be taken before any schoo! closures are con-
templated.

Murder date set

A PRELIMINARY hearing date hus been set in connec-
tion with the death of a Filipino sailor and the robbery
of his friend in North Vancouver on Oct. 24, 1991.

Ryan Allan Jacob, 25, and George Stephen Jacobs,
25, both of North Vancouver, are charged with the se-
cond-degree murder of Jovito Valdueva Beguna, 36.

“In addition, Jacob, Jacobs and a third man, Todd
Christopher Moody, 22, also of North Vancouver, are
charged with the robbery of Danilo Crisostomo, 35. .

The two Filipino sailors were on shore leave and had
been drinking at the Coach House Ina. °

Beguna’s body was Inter found in the 1100-block of
West 26th Street.

Jacob and Jacobs were not in custody when they ap-
peared in North Vancouver provincial court on Tuesday,
Apali3. .:

A preliminary bearing is set for May 31.

Block Watch
assists RCMP
in NV arrest

THE NORTH Vancouver
RCMP is crediting its Block
Watch program for captur-
ing a suspected burglar.

A police spokesman said that at
about } a.m. on Sunday, April 4,

an alert resident in the 1500-block
of Crown Street noticed a

suspicious suspect sitting in a
vehicle,
The suspect then fled the scene,

but the resident managed tu keep

track of his whereabouts as he
called the police.

The suspect was arrested a short
distance from the scene, with the
help of a police dog. The suspect
is now facing theft-from-auto-
related charges.
