Question: Upon reading your recent article on receiving reduced funeral costs through Memoria Society memberskip, I was puzzl- ed by the precaution to not put any pertinent information regard- ing funeral arrangements in a safety deposit box. What happens to the contents of a safety deposit box when its holder dies? Why not put burial information in it? Answer: The best place for burial information or your wishes tegarding funeral arrangemenis is- with your doctor, executor of your will, or with another close friend or family member. whom you can trust. . The main reason one should not put this information in the safety deposit box is this: since it can take up to over a week to get a death certificate, it is important that in the meastime, people are aware of the wishes of the deceas- ed and able to proceed with funeral arrangements. Once a death certificate is ac- " quired, a bank official will go PITCH-IN- CANADA! through the box with the executor or administrator. The contents will be listed, and a copy of the list will be given to the executor, one copy will be sent to the District Registrar of the Supreme Court in Victoria and one copy will be put in the safety deposit box. If there is a will in the box, it will be given to the executor. The remaining contents will be frozen for whatever period the bank or trust company policy states. This. can be anywhere from 14 days to the completion of full probate, or when letters of ad- ministration have becn granted. In some instances, if the box has been jointly leased with another person, the survivor may be able to take the contents im- mediately after the inventory has been made. This decision will be made at the discretion of the bank manag- er. Check with your financial in- stitution or bank about this.
