‘Boorish
troglodytes’
will die off

Dear Editor:

‘*The times they are
a’changin’..."’ But one thing that
hasn’t changed much is reflected in
the responses to Judy Gandossi’s
letter objecting to the Sunshine
Girl, as s/he has been labelled by
one of the earlier editorial wits of
the North Shore News.

The thing that hasn’t changed is
the trivialization of a person’s feel-
ings when she has been subjected
to humiliation as a member of an
identifiable group, and has ob-
jected to it. It makes no difference
if the group she belongs to is
racial, economic or sexual.

The stereotypes exemplified by
the Sunshine Girl are no less ob-
Jectionable because they are so
widespread, and no more bearable
because the “‘group’’ thus iden-
tified comprises fully half the
world population.

But I take heart from the chang-
ing times, and one lesson that was
brought home to me in this past
week is that sometimes you don’t
have to worry about changing
those boorish troglodytes who feel
so smug about being the sexist
misogynists that they so clearly
are: like Harold Ballard, they, too,
will die off.

We just have to be patient, and
the times will change, even if some
people don’t.
