WEST VANCOUVER District Council] members, with much discussion, voted themselves a raise at last week's meeting. Mayor Don Lanskail will receive an indemnity of $39,204 in 1989 and $41,164 in 1990. The six aldermen will earn one third of the mayor's portion — $13,068 this year, and $13,721 next year — plus the $300 a month each gets when appointed for two months as acting mayor. Last year, the mayor’s indemni- ty was $37,337, while the aldermen each received $10,117. The aldermen's portion is up from previous years, said Lanskail, when aldermen only got one fourth of the mayor’s salary. “IT have given the aldermen a much stronger role with the in- troduction of four functioning committees,’ explained Lanskail. One third of the indemnity is expected to go towards expenses incurred by council members for travelling and attending municipal functions. West Vancouver Council was formerly the second lowest paid council in the Lower Mainland — only higher than White Rock. “That could have been seen as a deterrent from entering public of- . fice,’ said Ald. Mark Sager, who said setting council salaries involv- ed finding the fine line between keeping participation in municipal politics a ‘‘commitment rather than a career’’ without discourag- ing candidates by offering too low a stipend. “Although we’re not here to get a fair wage for our work, I have to say | have a growing under- standing of the tremendous amount of time needed to serve the community properly,” Ald. Andy Burrard Band housing finished THE BURRARD Indian Band held a July 7 official opening cer- emony for six new housing units. The project consists of three three-bedroom, one four-bedroom and two five-bedroom single-fami- ly dwellings. Located on the Bur- rard Indian Reserve #3 in North Vancouver, the homes provide good quality, affordable housing for band members. A portion of the $492,800 capi- tal cost is being met with a 25-year mortgage from Citizens Trust Company. This loan has been insured by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the federal housing agency, under the National Hous- ing Act. Indian and Northern Affairs Canada has provided additional capital funding in the amount of $13,000. The land fer the con- struction of these housing units has been provided by the Indian band. Through CMHS, ongoing fi- nancial assistance in the amount of $38,030 will be provided for the first year to reduce the mortgage interest rate to as low as two per cent. The rent subsidy assistance will be provided for a period of 25 years and is extended to.keep oc- cupancy charges affordable for the residents.
