cream. to classic black, the colors
are coordinated to give women

Ann Ciona dresses avoid ruffles,
bustles and fiowered prints. Intead
the focus is on detail and the actu-
al “‘cut?? of the garment. With
peplum waistlines and slightly fit-
ted jackets, Ciona accentuates
strong and sexy shapes, giving the
wearer a flattering, curvacious
form. .

The line incorporates a variety
of necklines ranging from the
classically rounded to the grace-
fully plunging.

In her second season, Ciona has
created a spring ’87 line.

‘Last year, her collection — a
division of Beker Fashion Enter-
prises — received good reviews and
high sales levels.

Born in Canada, Ciona lived in
Europe throughout her teenage
years.

Upon returning to Canada,
Ciona studied fashion at the
Toronto School of Design. For
many years she has been devoted
to her profession, responsible for
designing several private label col-
lections.

FIRST it was designer jeans. Then
gourmet chocolates. On to sheets,
towels, fragrances and even eye-
glasses.

Most recently, fashion designers
from Paris to New York are mov-
ing to emblazon a designer label on
baby wear.

Dozens of new designer pro-
ducts, including clothing, bedding,
furniture and toys, are available to
contemporary parents at some
eye-popping costs.

A French lace dressing gown for
$20, an infant undershirt at $12
and a designer sleeper at $22 are
only a few of the haute couture
goods competing for the baby wear
dollar.

It's fair to say that the children
of these upwardly mobile parents
have not expressed a particular
preference, or even interest in these
pricey fashion statements. The
glamorous goods appeal to
grown-up sensibilities about fash-
fon, status and aesthetic value.

Do the labels really provide any
added benefit to baby? Many child
care experts — new mothers —
think not.

A number of national baby wear
manufacturers are sensitive to the
demands of mothers who maintain
@ no-nonsense attitude toward
selecting baby necessities. Items
commonly included in the layette
such as wardrobe, bedding and
nursery items have to meet time-
tested standards of quality and
value.

Today’s mothers continue to
select baby wear products with an
eye toward garments that are
manufactured with natural fibres
and which provide comfort.
