North Vancouver's Terry Duck could care less. The 20-year-old novice body builder returned from = the May 25 Okanagan Body Building Championships with a win in the novice women’s middleweight category The Okanagan champion- ships, held in Kamploops, were Duck's first body building competitions after a mere six months training. Duck says she started seriously working out with weights at the urgings of her boyfriend, a 10-year veteran of the body building wars: “the said I had good body building potential because 1 am naturally quite snuscular.”* suitial reaction to her quest Tor siuseles where women are “‘pposed to have muscles egative, says Duck, ‘A. ta: of people immediately said, ‘female body building? ooh, gross!’, but i never had anything against it, [ didn’t see it as being odd.”* Duck’s mother, Pat, says ‘that years ago she would have considered female body building to be toc manily,: ‘now I look at it totally dif- ferently. 1 can see these women are real athletes who have to have real dedication.” The benefits to Duck's physical and mental well- being and outward ap- pearance have converted most other original naysayers. Duck says she feels better, looks better, and has more energy and inward confidence. But the life of a body builder is not all strut and adulation nor has Duck’s six month road to physical and spiritual betterment been E BACK H TRY OUR NEW SUMMER LUNCH MENU FEATURING FRESH, FRESH FISH FLOWN IN DAILY FROM AROUND THE WORLD, SIMPLY Mon. thru Sat. 8-12 midnight GRILLED OVER MESQUITE CHARCOAL, WONDERFUL, LIGHT, CRISP & TASTY SEAFOOD. She works out daily for two hours --dieting, she says, is a killer. Because body building competitions are judged on individual muscle definition, even a thin layer of body fat can mask this all-important definition. Therefore, in the fiveemonth period before a competition, the diet of a body builder becomes pro- gressively more spartan, culminating in the final 72-hour pre-competition period when body builders must know, to the hour, when their bodies are at their peak of muscular definition. Duck says all fat must be chopped from her food in- take during training, fluids must be restricted, and ‘‘no salts or sugars, especially salts because they retain so much liquid.” A fine balance must be struck between burning off fat and burning off all- important muscle, says Duck: ‘tyou have to keep protein coming in or the body will start getting it from the muscles."" Duck adds that, besides the demands on muscle and taste bud, there is the demand ona body builder's pocket book. “The price of tanning alone is $100 per 26 sessions, vitamins run approximately $200 for a two-month supply, and, of course, there is the cost of your gymnasium membership.”’ Though she has aspirations to join the police force, Duck, a dietician’s aid at Lynn Valley’s Cedarview Lodge, says she feels she has the ability to go all the way in the world of female body building. [t's a matter of priorities and commitments, she says, “‘I°ll just play it by ear.” Mrs. Duck is convinced her daughter will persevere: “She’s at a good age to develop. A lot of female body builders are in their 30s, Terry’s young, she’s always been athletic, and she has the drive:”” Body building, says Mrs. Duck, runs in the family: ‘I work out two or three times a week, [ guess { take after Terry.” Duck’s next competition will be the June 15 B.C. finals. Depending on her finish there, Duck could be bound for the body building big leagues where the winks, nudges, and ‘tok, brothers”’ will be those of her admirers not her detractors.
