New home brings back memories

USUALLY, this column is written over coffee on

Saturday morning right

after the News special

delivers the weekend food ads.

Today, Monday morning,
i'm well into the coffee and
48 hours late with the copy.
I really don’t care.

Brian and | bought our
first (and until now, only)
home in June, 1964. I wasn’t
excited about it - how can
you get excited about a three
bedroom tract home with no
paint, no flooring, no fur-
niture and no money? And
one infant daughter.

I gave our house five years
— “I hate this place. Better
get me out soon or I'l! go
bananas!”*

What really bothered me
was that I’d come from
Dunbar where I could walk,
shop, visit the library and
keep the kid from screaming
by pushing a buggy.

Here? Nothing. Hills,
half-completed houses and

kids and I hated the house.
Nobody hated a house like I
hated this one.

So, we went house-hun-
ting. Each time 1 found
something about the new
place that wasn’t as good as
what we had and cost more

Each time, Brian went
along with adding a room,
