The climax of the Canadian Ringette scene was last weekend's 5th Annual Canadian National Championships held in Sherwood Park, Alberta. The event attracted 500 girls from nine provinces on 24 teams in three age divisions: Jr Belles (14 and _ under) Belles (17 and under) and Debs (18 and over). British Columbia sent a team in each of the three divisions, with excellent representation from the North Shore - Kathleen McCormick, Yvonne Hunter, Sharon Ralf, Michelle Green, Michelle Lanzo, Terri Scott, Laureen Lohin, Allison Bennett, Sarah Butterworth for the Jr. Belles. The Belle team in- cluded north shore players Christine Nordstrom, Kim DeGeer, Laura Dickinson, Sharon Griffin, and Loree Bennett. B.C. teams experienced more than a few problems after a promising _ start against Saskatchewan, coming up with two 6th places and one 7th. The teams from Alberta, On- tario, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Manitoba have it all together - passing, shooting, defending around the net - and quickly proceeded to show what 85 games a season can do for a team, compared to the 20 or so that the B.C. girls play. However, for the third year in a row, the B.C. Belles won the coveted Sportsgalship trophy, for sportsgalship both on and off the ice, awarded on the basis of voting by each team. Quebec Debs won the Sportsgalship trophy in their division, and in the Belle division, the popular ‘‘Newfies’’ were the unanimous winners. From the Strains of “Ise the By” wafting from their dressing room to their 12 year old goalie, they had all the fans cheering them on. Their aim was to score against Ontario and they did it (Ontario won 28-1). The Newfoundland coach was heard to say “We've had more goals scored against us than we have Ringette players registered in our Province!” Also held this year were the Shoppers Drug Mart Skill Awards, a new program in which girls from each province demonstrated their abilities, compared to other girls their age, in the following categories: Forward and Backward Speed Skating, Ring Han- dling and Shooting. B.C. girls did surprisingly well in this event, with Yvonne Hunter from Squamish coming so close to the gold medal that she was given a special award. Some of the girls won ringette sticks personally autographed by Wayne Gretzky. Next year, the Nationals will be in Brntish Columbia.
