LANDLORDS PROMISE NOT ENOUGH By CAROLE STAFFORD When the ceiling fell in on a North Van- couver couple, it was just too much. So two days later they moved to West Vancouver. The woman, who asked not to be identified, told the News that she had com- plained to the management of Whitely Court apart- ments, located behind Westlynn Mall, for a month and a half about a leak in her living room ceiling. “They kept saying they'd get to it, but nothing was done -- except a week and a half ago they stuffed plastic into the roof. But the water just kept building up inside the plastic!” Tuesday night she and her family watched a bulging bubble burst, spewing water, flaking plaster and soggy insulation all over their living room. The previous Thursday, the Fishers, who live across the hall at Whitely Court, were in bed when the ceiling suddenly caved in, dumping water and plaster over them and destroying their mattress and $250 down quilt. Ly DESPITE THE HOLES in the ceiling, Mr. Fisher and her husband don't want to move. A spokesman for the management company said they will be making complete repairs. WORD DESIGNS LTD. 2460 Marine Drive, West Van 022-3014 Ken Fisher says he'd complained of a leak in the ceilings of both the bedroom and the living room since he moved in three and half years ago. “But there have been three or four different owners during that time. They all said they'd see to it, but never did anything.” He says Intra West Properties have owned the properties for only about a month and a half and they are the first to do anything about the problems. A spokesman for Intra West said the company is “well aware” of the problems and said she believed many of the problems were ignored in the past by previous owners. Susan Little said the present problem was “a matter of bad timing”, referring to all the rain and snow that has fallen over the past month. This, she said, had made it impossible for complete repairs to be carried out. She indicated that the company felt the temporary measures carried out by previous owners would be enough to hold until spring. But she said they were 6695 Nelson Ave. West Vancouver “Two stttings 6:30/9:00 - Special 5-course game dinner Ceiling caves in on N. Van apartment residents wrong. Little said repairs to the inside (or the ceiling) could not be effectively carried out until the exterior problem was corrected. In addition, Little ex- plained that the company had offered to put the un- named family into a motel room until repairs could be completed, but she said the family refused. ¥ STILL SEEPING Maintenance men arrived Thursday and placed plywood boards over the holes -- but the couple who decided to move say the water is still seeping through. The woman also said a large blue tarpaulin has been spread over half the building — but not her half. She said it was tied to a tree and she didn't think some tenants would be able to see out. Fisher said he was able to adjust the tarpaulin so that he can now see out from his balcony.
