Tahiti travellers
warned ‘beware’

McClelland warns British
Columbians planning a
holiday in Tahiti to take
precautions against a
mosquito-borne disease that
is present on the South
Pacific island.

The illness, called
‘dengue’, is usually ac-
companied by high fever,
headache, joint and muscle
paig, and occasional rash. It
is used by a mosquito-
borne virus.

“The Health - Minister
- suggested persons planning a
holiday in Tahiti take along
insect repelient and wear
protective clothing such as
long-sleeved shirts, and
blouses, and pants in lieu of
shorts. A vaccine is not
currently available for
protection against dengue.
Anyone having an_ illness,
with a fever, within 2 or 3
weeks of leaving for Tahiti is
advised to contact their

doctor before leaving.
