Question: This suramer I will be flying to G..ario for a family gathering and the spreading of my mother’s ashes. She died last year, and it was her. request that our family reunite at her birthpiace _for this event. I Rave heard that the airlines will grant a speciai rate to people who have te travel to funerals. Is this true, and would my situation qualify? Answer: The rate you are refer- ring to is known as a compas- sionate travel discount. It is of- fered by Canada’s two major airlines, Air Canada and Cana- dian Airlines International Ltd. (Canadian), and also applies to their connector airlines. Program encourages taking care of recreation trails THE FEDERATION of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia has declared the week of Monday, April 6 to Sunday, April 12, as Adopt-A-Trail Week in B.C. The Adopt-A-Trail Program has been running for several years in cooperation with the B.C. Ministry of Parks, the Ministry of Forests and many municipalities. The program encourages volun- teer groups to ‘take on the maintenance and. care of a hiking ‘trail: or part of a trail in com- munities throughout the province. Adopting a ‘trail gives a group the opportunity to enjoy the cut- doors together through . mean- ingful exercise, learning new skills P sntereter esa (a8 The rates are for round-trip tickets to family funerals. The airlines’ definition of ‘‘family” is quite bread and can include step-parents, in-laws, aunts aad uncles. The Canadian airline fares are limited to travel within Canada whereas Air Canada’s compas- sionate discounts apply anywhere in North America and the United Kingdom. The discount amounts to 35% off the regular fare and is meant for people who must travel on short notice and therefore cannot take advantage of advance book- ing discounts. Since you have the opportunity to book your ticket in advance, chances are you either don’t qual- ify for much financial difference. However, the airlines have an application procedure that you can go through to determine your eligibility. Because travel to funerals is usually on a last-minute basis, most people apply for the dis- the compassionate dis- g count, or that it wouldn’t make } count after travel in the form of a rebate. Be sure to keep a copy of your ticket and your boa: ding passes. You will also require either an original, fax copy or photocopy of the death certificate or funerai home certificate and veur com- pleted application form, wiich in certain cases must be signed by a notary public. LUBE, OIL Application forms are available from tzavel agencies or airline of- fices. ; We are told that applications are considered on an individual basis, so there may be some ex- ceptions. For example, a trip may be made to visit a dying relative who dies during the visit, and even though the trip wasn’t made specifically for a funeral, the dis- count raie will probably apply. For more information about the program, speak to your travel agent or call the administrative office of the airline you are travel- ling on.
