A couple of times I felt like standing up and yelling at him (the lawyer). If I was her (Janice), I would have walked out half-way during the hearing and tell them to forget it,’’ she Snarls. “Janice is a strong girl,”’ but you can tell she was upset by the questions. She told us again that ‘The reason I’m goifg through with it is I can prevent him from raping another girl’.’’ How did Stan react? He was able to control his emotions, he says. **Well, I don’t normally react angrily to things that are already done. Who’s to say how many girls have been molested or raped while these suspects are released on bail?’’ (Janice’s ‘alleged attacker was released on bail.) ANGRY AT COURTS ‘Another reason I’m an- gry at the courts is because Janice’s past was brought up at the preliminary hearing. The prosecutor assured us that nothing in her, past would be part of the evidence. Yet, when the suspect’s lawyer brought up the fact, among others, that Janice was a previous run- away,, the prosecutor just sat there.”* _ ‘The prosecutor had told us that a person’s past had nothing to do with whether she was raped. Even prosti- tutes can be raped too,’’ Stan quotes the prosecutor as telling them. Perhaps the most distres- sing point about the whole thing, the father repeats is the time it takes. “‘The guy could be innocent too, and should not be left waiting so long to face the trauma of the verdict. The idea of putting away the guy who smokes grass is fine with them, yet they won’t speed up the process to settle these (rape) cases. “If he is guilty, have him convicted, and give him proper psychiatric care if necessary,’’the father sug- gests, raising his voice. QUESTIONS EXPECTED | But Stan and Mary. have’ some more suggestions. They say the prosecutor’s office should help rape victims prepare for the hearing, for example, by telling them what questions they can expect. ‘“‘I had no idea they were going to ask Janice all those questions,”’ Mary says. Stan advises parents: ‘‘The main thing is there is no sense in gettinZ too emotionally upset about it when your child is raped. What the father should do is to keep the pressure on the courts to get it over with. ‘*Even though the girl has to go through that type of thing, with all the embaras- sing questions, I believe she should press charges any way. - ‘This protestant ethic that you should remain a virgin until you die or get married, could easily upset parents when their child is raped. But remember that it’s also the time that the girl will need more affection and understanding.”’ it all? Got the blues? Want to get away from Take a walk!
