The library is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month with a cal- endar full of special events. September 18 to 23, the library held a Clear Your Accounts Week, where readers owing fines of more than 25 cents returned overdue materials for a standard fine of 25 cents per item. The week of Sept. 25 to Sept. 30 will see a Storytelling Festival for children at all branches. On Tues- day Sept. 26, 7 p.m. at Lynn Valley Library, Iccal historian Roy Pallant offers a talk on the histovy of North Vancouver District. On Saturday, Sept. 30, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the library celebrates with a big birthday party at the Lynn Valley branch. Watch for a giant birthday cake, free coffee and juice, tours, tributes, special guests, storytelling and entertain- ment by ihe Vancouver Morris Men and the Sweet Adelines. During Library Week, Sept. 30 to Oct. 7, the Lynn Valley branch headquarters will be open for behind-the-scenes touring. Tours are available 10:30 a.m., Oct.3; 2:30 p.m., Oct. 4; 10:30 a.m., Oct. 5; 2:30 p.m., Oct. 6. Historia! displays will be open for viewing at all branches. North Vancouver District chicf lidrarian Enid Dearing has been with the library since its inception 25 years ago. Dearing was the first librarian hired following the establishment of a municipal library system. Before 1964, the district was served by four volunteer-operated library assocaitions. Said Dearing, “The fargest was run by the Capilano Public Library Associa- tion in Edgemont Village. The job became too much for the volun- teers and a referendum was held in December of 1963 for a municipal library. The vote was favorable and a library board was established and appointed by mayor and council.” Twenty-five years ago, district libraries hefd 28,229 books and posted a circulation of 262,386.
