WILL I live to be 100? A few years ago many of us thought that was a silly question. But, with all of the new information about what keeps us healthy, and the advances in medical treat- ment available nowadays, it’s not that unusual for people to live 100 years or more. And some recent news sto- ries say that our children and grandchildren could live to be 140 or 150 years old. I’ve heard some people say that they don’t want to extend their life span if it means being chronically il! or disabled. However, on the North Shore we already know of more than 50 peo- ple who have reached the magic age of 100 or more, and many of them are healthy and active. Last week I attended the 100th birthday party of Jessie McDougall, who has lived on the North Shore since 1925 when her hus- band, Mickey McDougall, was appointed principal of North Vancouver High School. While raising two children, Barry and Anne, she also coached high-school hockey and became a great cook. The party, held in the Lonsdale Recreation Centre, adjacent to the Mickey | McDougall Gym, was attended by many family members and friends, includ- ing Mayor Barbara Sharp and former ‘mayor Jack Daryl Wing Pharmacist CAPSULE COMMENTS A research study involving 27,000 Seventh-day Adven- tists was published recently. The study defined the number of years earlier that heart dis- ease would occur in people with the following risk fac- tors: being overweight: 1.9 years; smoking: 3.1 years; high blood pressure: 4.9 years; no regular exercise: 5.7 years; diabetes: 8.3 years. Studies like these really rein- force the merits of a low-fat diet, no smoking or drinking of alcohol and adequate exer- cise. Free Parkin Free Delivery for P| Prescriptions DAVIES PHARMACY 1401 Se. Jessie was escorted into the room by a piper and birthday messages were read, including one from the Queen, who mentioned that her own mother will turn 100 in August of this year. Lionsview Seniors’ Planning Society has been given a grant from the District of North Vancouver Millennium Fund to carry our a project honouring all North Shore centenarians —~ those who have reached the age of 100, or will turn 100 before Dec. 31, 2000. We would like to recognize everyone who fits this description but we don’t know who they all are. We've written to churches and seniors’ housing com- plexes, and consulted with nursing home operators and home support workers, but I’m sure there are others out there.
