THE Field cf Honow at the North Shore Cemetery will be the site of a commemora- tive candlelight ceremo- ny Sept. 12. The ceremony, which is open to the public, is intend- ed to honour Canadian war veterans as part of Veterans” International Memorial Day Service. The tradition began in The Netherlands in 1995, when Dutch citizens held « special ceremony to commemorate the liberation of their country by Canadian Forces in 1945. Dutch children placed lighted candles on the graves of fallen Canadian soldiers. This has become an annual event across Eurese. B.C. was the first province in Canada to AYLOR initiate the ceremonies, according to Fred Udell, pres- ident of the Korean Veterans Association of Canada Unit 49. Last year, over 30 B.C. communitics took part in can- diclight ceremonies. At the last candlelight cer- emony at North Vancouver's Mountainview Cemetery in May, 500 children feft candles burning overnight in honour of Canadian servicemen and women. Veterans and youth from across the North Shore will join guests at the ceremony on Sunday, including Ted White MP, the Consul Generals of France and The Netherlands, the Mayors of North Vancouver City and District, representatives from Veterans Affairs Canada and other veterans groups.
