Following a toast to a meal alone and without mashed potatoes be- ing lobbed back and forth be- tween offspring, my wife and t shared an Antipasto Misto ($5.75). The dish was a wonderful ap- petizer. Fitm buffs have been teased with bits and pieces from the trio with songs written for the Dreyfus-De Vito vehicle Tin Men, an FYC cameo in the same movie, and singer Roland Gifts acting role in My Beautiful Launderette. Ever Fallen In Love, written for Jonathan Demme's film Something Wild, simmers on the cooked side of the album version of The Raw & The Cooked. The 10 songs are consistently solid, guaranteeing a lengthy ride on the charts for the release. Sty- listically the tunes are all over the place. Centre stage on the plate was a serving of Caponatina, a Sicilian vegetable antipasto. Teacher fights burnout From page 21 Local dancer Karen Jamieson and Olympic silver medalist and former world champion figure skater Karen Magnussen have sought Leggatt out as a teacher and choreographer, But Leggatt is probably best known to locals for his work with the North Shore Light Opera Society, where he worker for 12 Teday, having just finished his most recent ie The Y oh Widow — a light operetta whic enjoyed a successful run at Rich- mond’s Gateway Theatre — Leg- gait says he’s becoming more relaxed about teaching. “Vm not imposing as much on the performers as far as saying you have to do this and that. | take the “Wing’s Garden | Restaurant KPA CHINESE SMORGASBORD FRIDAY, SATURDAY & SUNDAY Sto 9pm $7.25 LUNCH Smorgasbord 11:30 - 230pm $4.50 SENIOR’S SPECIAL Evening Smorgasbord $5.75 Monday-Tuesday Night Special Families receive 30% off Offer expires March 31/89, 985-8115 3043 Woodbine Drive, North Van. talents they have and moid them to suit the show so they feel more comfortable with it,” he says, ad- mitting that burnout is starting to set in with ali the demands of his work “it’s very tiring, and as | get older it gets more tiring. Tasty pickings, either raw or cooked. **** Fareed Haque — Voices Ris- ing, Pangaea/IRS Records 1988 A dazzling debut from a 25- year-old Chicago native of Pakistani and Chilean lineage. Haque takes his instrument of choice, a nylon-strung acoustic guitar, and blends a variety of sources, including an omnipresent jazz influence, flamenco, pop and South American folk for an original and intuitive synthesis. There’s a finely-balanced tension to all of the compositions. Haque achieves it by pulling off no simple trick. Fused to a dispassionate jazz foundation of muscular bass and light percussion, Haque’s nimble- fingered guitar counterpoints with Service was good. La Cucina waiters are all familiar with the dishes they serve and adept at recommending complementary wines and foods. My wife sampled Roast Duckling with Salsa Picante ($14.95), while | tried the Beef Tenderloin topped with prescuitto ham and mushrooms. The duck, its skin roasted crackl- ing crisp, featured an excellent vinegar and red wine sauce in- vigorated with anchovies and shrimps. My beef tenderloin was a superb red-meat dish. Prepared to precise rare specifications, it came with ample mushrooms and slices of proscuitto, which provided a good sharp foil to the beef flavors. - La Cucina produces an excellent example of the stylish and com- plex side of the Italian culinary character that is ali too often over- shadowed by its pan-popular pasta and pizza traits. Its food is first rate, but its prices are very reasonable. Pe ARTS&X ENTERTAINMENT Surprise Your Eyes! The stand-out cuts include an introspective piece called Paco‘s Blues and Yatra, where Haque shows off with some agile fret-work. Amazingly, he’s only been play- ing guitar for 11 years. But the skill obviously stems from more than the eight hours a day of practice he put in to know the instrument. MICHAEL BECKER record reviewer It springs from an empathetic musical ear and an open heart. *** Roy Orbison -— Mystery Girl, Virgin Records 1989 He may have departed a Wilbury, but he left us with a posthumously-released album true to the Big “O” roots. While the saturation airplay hit You Got It is profoundly Wilburyesque in both tone and delivery (it will make a great car ad soundtrack), the balance of the collection finds Orbison sym- pathetically produced by (fellow Wiibury traveller) Jeff Lynne, T Bone Burnett, Bono and Barbara Orbison. He exited on a popular high and with his astounding falsetto intact. FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS DISH OUT R&B The man from Wink, Texas will mostly be remembered for his mastery of the heart-imploding ballad form. He produces the tear-jerking goods on Mystery Girl with In The Real World and The Only One. The creative waters run a bit shallow on the mawkish Wind- surfer, but the rest of the tracks give us the “‘O” we've come to love and know. ** New order — Technique, Fac- tory Communications/PolyGram Records 1989 The bleak obsessions of rock ’n roll suicide lan Curtis, which once propelled this band in its incarna- tion as Joy Division, have by now been completely replaced by a brighter, more upbeat new order. it remains essential dance-floor material, but you don’t have to wear and see black to join the oscillating folk in club land. In fact, now’s as good a time as any to recycle that colorful mid-’70s, wide-style clothing. The disco beat is shamelessly resurrected by New order en a couple of cuts. But the band recovers and sounds best when the techno-pop takes a back seat to happily twangy guitars and Peter Hook’s unique bass sound.
