Help save hounds Dear Editor: My name is Erin Rutka and I'm 13 veers old. T have a hamster, two dogs and one cat. My mom works at Howe Sound Pet Services in Park Royal. She has got me into loving dogs and the dif- ferent kinds of breeds there are. When [ was watching the TV this afternoon { had noticed a show abour dogs. Sadly enough tt was abort dog racing. They were grev- hounds. When they started to talk Kill them if no one has wanted to adopt them. Mv heart sank to my toes and tears filled my eves. People do not. care about these sweet dogs. They also think that the dogs should not have to live if they are slow I think thar it shouid be against the law to race or use or harm animals in any way. T think that there are a lot of greedy people who just want money and who do not notice or care that this could be the Jast day for a sweet dog who has done nothing, bute try to The way thar they kill the dogs is what makes me even more upset. “They starve them, shoot them and even electrocute then, J hope all of this sadness can be helped. The reason’ fam writing is to uw if you could try te save the dogs who have to race and later on be killed. You could help by puting up a sign in the SPCA telling people to help out by adept- ing a greyhound pup, or even contacting someone who can put a step to this. Erin Rutka about when the dogs lose they __ live. the overhyped Dear Editor: I seriously doubt that any of the Three Tenors would nonchalantly walk off'a con- cert stage in Paris, London, Rome or New York, breaking a promise and advertised contract, the way they did on New Year's Eve here in Vancouver. Had they returned even briefly at midnight, with their friends and Pavarotti’s arm round Brian Adanis’ shoulder, it would have brought the house down. Instead, those missing few minutes and farewell wave have had a serious after- effect on the awakening Vancouver audi- ence. Until recently, audience credulity has made Vancouver the target of internation- al shyster impresarios, laughing at our standing ovations all the way to the bank. But the worm is beginning to turn. For years we've been inundated with staic overpriced live entertainment that has worn out its welcome elsewhere. But now, can there be anyone lett who's not fed-up with the endless hype of names such as Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the likes of his resurrected, J.C. Super Star tattered Joseph's Coat, mournful Cats on the roof top, and philandering Phantom in the basemert? It’s been a long time in Vancouver since someone, like the lively, talented Mitzi Gaynor, put their heart and soles into a really fresh song and dance perfor- manice. Denis Mason West Vancouver North Vancouver turf city over voter turnout Dear Editor: There will always be speculation as to why vot- ers turn out at the polls or not. To suggest that low voter turnout in North Vancouver City is a reason to eliminate that municipality altogether (Nov, 24 News editorial), simply is not logical unless that logic is applied to all municipalities. To do otherwise means the News merely wish- es to single out North Vancouver City. If we apply the same logic as the News did regarding whether residents care if they have any- one at city hall because 82% of the city’s residents did not vote, 72% of the residents of North Vancouver District did not vote. These residents obviously do not care whether they have anybody at their district hall. To go one step further, the largest voter turnout in the entire province was 40%. To again apply the same logic as the North Shore News did to North Vancouver City, in any given municipality, over 60% or more of the popu- lation did not vote and therefore all municipalities should be eliminated. Hopefully, by the comments made in the edito- rial, it is not the desire of the North Shore News to eliminate all local political decisions on taxes, bylaws regarding noise, development issues, water quality, rezoning, arts, health care, support for youth and seniors, regional issues, sewers, etc. That will leave the provincial government in charge. Politics and media. Sometimes one’s views are better left unsaid.
