THE CURIOSITY of childrenis the

_ main reason why 1,300 fires are started
by kids each year in the country, accord-
ing to Health Canada:

Approximately 10 kids under age five die
each years as a result of playing with lighters
and matches.

Health Canada says that 150 people sustain
burns in fires every year. Fires cause an esti-
mated $14 million in property damage annual-
ly, according to the federal government.

Parents can help prevent their childrea from
becoming burn statistics. Health Canada says
that, in many cases, a parent will tempt fate by

Since June, all disposable lighters sold in
Canada were required to be “child resistant.”

“Child resistant” does not mean “child
proof,” warns, Health Canada.

Adult burns

For the 20- to 50- year -old crowd, the
Bum Awareness Coalition says the main rea-
sons for bums and death by bums include the
following:
gasoline: Heavier-than-air vapors can flow
invisibly along the ground and be ignited by a
spark or flame a “considerable distance”
away;
& smoking;
i electricity: Adults often take electricity for
granted which might help explain why the
Burn Awareness Coalition saz's that electrical
accidents are going up each year.

To prevent shocks, homeowners should
have Ground Fault Interruptor (GF1) breakers

on outlets outside of their houses. ©
