UST A few months back |
was noting the number of
large-format wildlife
ooks devoted to wolves,
wild cats, eagles, orcas, etc.
and bemoaning the lack of a
similar volume celebrating
the wily and much-maligned
coyote.

Needless to say, | am deligh-
ed to see this book, which has a
very informative text by former
Harrowsmith editor Wayne
Grady and pictures by some of
the best wildlife photographers in
the world.

Grady’s text is a sometimes
gruesome but revealing account
of the deliberate “demonisation”
of the small prairie “barking
wolf.” Nobody but Hollywood's
lonesome dowpokes seems to
have cared much for the coyote,
not even Mark Twain, but full-
scale persecution only got under
way around the turn of the cen-
tury, significantly right about the
time the U.S. department in
charge of eradicating the timber
wolf had pretty much fulfilled its
mandate.

Is there anything more fear-
some than a bureaucracy on the
hunt for a reason to hang onto its
budget and perks?

As Grady observes, this was
only one instance, a sinail part of
the larger assumed mission of
North American goverrments to
exterminate any and all native
wildlife that might conceivably
prey on of compete with,
domestic livestock, That’s why

Grady also quotes the term
Barry Lopez coined in Of Men
and Wolves to describe the spe-
cial antipathy humans feel for the
wild cousins of “man’s best
friend,” theriopholsia: “Fear of
the beast as an irrational, violent,
insatiable creature. Fear of the
projected beast in oneself.”

As Grady notes, this amounts
to a fear of nature as a whole, In
aboriginal cultures, it likely
accounts for such supernatural
