Considering the
power of love

I WROTE the president of the United States, Bill Clinton
(and wife, Hillary, as well); sent them my January column,

“The horns, whistles and bells
astrologically oriented colleagues and I,

of hope’: ‘‘We are, my

course and are heartened by the ascendancy of Leonine
light, love and wisdom that you seem to represent.

quote within my weekly commen-
tary for Vancouver's North Shore
News, ‘Man laughs at his
greatness in taming the atom, but
man has tamed nothing. When
man can tame the power of love,
then man has tampered with
power!’ — Proteus.

“| know that the better angels
of your aspiring nature will ap-
preciate this; but would you go so
far as to include it in a speech? I
would hope so!”’

I had in mind the big one, the
upcoming: inaugural address.

It occurred to me that if he
were reluctant (due to how the
military might respond) that
perhaps his wife, ‘“‘the most in-
telligent person { know,’’ might
approve.

After all, women generally have
less trouble with the word ‘‘love.’”

Later, it came to my attention
that duriig. an all-night rehearsal
with advisers, speechwriters, Al
Gore and George Stephanopoulos
(his press secretary) in attendance,
Clinton announced: ‘‘My wife and
daughter are adamani about not
saying ‘love one another.’ They
think I have to say ‘care for’ (a
passage in the speech called on
Americans to ‘‘recognize a simple
but powerful truth: we need each
other. And we must love’ one
another.’")

It was true that citizenship re-
quired a certain intimacy, said
Clinton, but love carried ‘‘so
many different implications’’ that
its meaning could not be control-
led.

Some people might think the

president was claiming religious
authority.
After a long silence,
Stephanopoulos spoke up. ‘‘Can I
make. one
love?”’ he asked.

“You can,’’ Clinton replied,
“but. Hillary and Chelsea. think
we're not as sensitive to this as we
should be.”

Millions of Americans don’t sift
the nuances of words, he said,
and to the ‘‘hard-pregsed and
hard-bitten,’’ the word “love”
might hit them as intzusive or of-
fensive.

“Or it might be interpreted in
almost a flaky way,’’ he added,

| “like what some people thought.
about Carter.”

“OK, no love,’’ conceded
Stephanopoulos.

A wise lesson from Hillary and
Chelsea, but I still wish he would
use that quote in a speech because
it’s true, and I love the truth.

Truth is, “‘love,’’ any way you
look at it, is absolutely all there
is.
