Census reveals surprising
stats on Canadian farms

IN 1991, for the first time
in the history of the Census
of Agriculture, more than
one person per farm could
be reported as a farm oper-
ator.

This innovation produced a
more complete picture of Cana-
dian farm operators and revealed
that one quarter of all farm oper-
ators were women.

B.C. reported that 35% of its
farm operators were women, the

highest percentage in any pro-
vince. B.C. also had the highes:
percentage of sole female opera-
tors, with 13.4%,

Across Canada, female farm
Operators were younger than their
maie counterparts, with an
average age of 46 compared to '8
for men.

B.C. recorded the highest
average age for female farmers at
47.2 and the highest average age
for male farmers at 49.8.

Two-operator farms accounted
for one-third of Canadian farms

in 1991, of which 87% were
managed by one man/one woman
combinations.

tn B.C, 43% of all farms were
two-operator farms.

Most of Canada’s farm opera-
tors (63%) reported no off-farm
employment duriag 1990.

However, the group with
Canada’s highest rate was
reported in B.C., where males on
two-operator farms reported a
52% rate of of f-farm work.

This was the only group with a
rate of more tham 50%.
