OVER 400 of Vancouver's
toniest art patrons celebrat-
ed the 10th anniversary of
Splash last Saturday night.

Splash, Arts Umbrella’s most
significant annual fundraising
event, is responsible for raising
13% of their annual operating
budget.

Twenty thousand children par-
ticipate annuaily in Arts Um-
brella’s programs, and 75% of
these children require and will
receive financial assistance.

This year’s Splash art auction
raised 2total of $175,000 and
Yorkton Securities’ head honcho
Frank Giustra was responsible for
a good portion of that money.

The first painting off the block
was a Joe Average ... Frank had
announced earlier that he intended
to buy the painting — and he
meant it! By the time the bidding
had reached $8,000, the painting
belonged to the Giustras, and the’
mean price for a Joe Average had
reached an all-time high.

Jack Shadbolt was honored as
one of Splash’s founders and a
great supporter over the past 10
years. His piece in this year’s auc-

tion, “Field Magic,’* was describ-
ed by architect Al Waisman as ‘‘a
quieter, more elegant version of
Jack’s butterfly series,”

Frank and Kadina Giustsa were
not going to leave without the
Shadbolt — they had just the
right wall in their wonderful new
house’ Stuart Belkin finally pulled
his paddle down at the $25,000
mark, and another $1,000 cinched
the deal for the Giustras, a new
record for a single auction item at
Splash.

One of the more unusual pieces
in the auction was the work by
Joanna Staniszkis. Enclosed in a
plexi box and wrapped in flowing
fibres, Joanna described the work
as *‘having to do with the perpet-
ual recycling of salmon."*

Joanna was wearing a gorgeous
navy-blue fitted full-length gown
of pressed fabric. Her own design
and creation, she described the
gown as ‘'very Issey Miyake-
influenced."*

Bill and Tracey Rand were the
successful bidders on Tike Kerr’s
piece. The painting will go to their
farm in Sienna, ltaly. St depicts
the surrounding village architec-
ture so perfectly, Dill wondered if
Tiko painted it there.

Recently-returned Chris Woat-
ten, new head of the Playhouse
Theatre, was thrilled to see so
many of his old cronies under the
same roof. ... He beamed with the
news that The Millionairess, with
a sold-out run, has been held over
until Oct. 31. ... Get your tickets
fast!

By the end of the evening, as
the Jast dancers were swaying to
the sounds of Lovie Eli and The
Circle of Voices, financial wizard
Harald Ludwig packed out his
$10,000 curio cabinet created by
the IBI Group,.and Stuart Belkin
was very pleased to be the suc-
cessful bidder, at $15,000, for the
Gordon Smith.

seeing the sights of the North
Shore last Thanksgiving holiday
weekend.

He’s here to headline the new
TY series called Jack's Place
which is shooting here for the next
few months, You might not know

it, but the smooth and
sophisticated Hal Linden is one of
the best song-and-dance men in
the business!

He started shooting the new
show two weeks ago.

His Jack’s Place co-star is the

Something else I’ve just learned
is that the producer of one of
Hollywood's most popular televi-
sion series is a North Shore
native. His name is Ted Mann and
his parents live in West Van.

Here’s some encouragement for
parents who have kids who hate
school. Ted Mann detested
school! He couldn’t wait to finish.
He left home for Los Angeles
with a joke book, 50 bucks in his
jeans and a dream in his head.

A few years later he was direc-
ting the television hit series
M*A*S*H and during 1975-76, he
was the national editor of the Na-
tional Lampoon.

Right now, he is the producer
of the popular TV series Civil
Wars, with Mariel Hemingway.
Not only does he produce the
program, he writes every third
show. ...

All of Howe Street and most of
the Stock Exchange building turn-
ed up at St. Andrews-Wesley
Church and fater at I Giardino to
bid farewell to the great Wally
Dezura on Tuesday.

With all those high-powered
brokers and promoters, there was
great speculation as to who would
come up with the best one-liner.

Turned out that the top come-
dian was Wally himself — as
quoted by Harry Moll in his
eulogy, ‘‘Wally was 56 years old,
or as he used to say, 45 U.S.!’ ..,
