NEWS BRIEFS Hit and run A CYCLIST was the victim of a hit and run Monday in the Caulfeild area. Darin Wong was riding westbound in the 4600-block of Marine Drive at 11:44 a.m. when he was struck on the arm by a silver, four-door sedan. Wong was taken to Lions Gate Hospital where he received eight stitches above his eye. According to a West Vancouver police spokesman, the car could have been a Chevrolet. Witnesses to the accident are asked to contact the West Vancouver Police Department at 922-4141, Thieves jailed TWO VANCOUVER women have been jailed following an Aug. 13 shoplifting spree in the Park Royal Shopping Centre. Vina Holland, 38, was sentenced Aug. 15 in West Vancouver provincial court to 30 days in jail after she pleaded guilty to stealing shoes from The Bay and a dress from Suzy Creamcheese; she also pleaded guilty to possession of a pair of men’s pants stolen from Tip Top Tailors and to obstructing a police officer. Co-accused Cynthia Cardinal, 30, was sentenced to seven days in jail on two theft charges and for being in possession of stolen clothing from Boutique Alexander snd Mariposa. Judge Sonny Stromberg-Stein atso placed both women on probation for one year. Cyclist struck THE WEST Vancouver Police are seeking information from several witnesses who saw a cyclist hit by a car Aug. 17 in the 2400-block Marine Drive at 10:55 a.m. A police spokesman said several people saw the acci- dent and even assisted the injured cyclist. The unnamed cyclist had been crossing Marine Drive when he was struck from behind by a car. He is listed in stable condition in hospital. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the West Vancouver Police at 922-4141, Man sentenced A SURREY man was sentenced Aug. 9 in West Van- - eouver provincial court to 45 days in jail for driving while disqualified. Gary T. Berkley, 42, was found guilty of driving April 23 on Jefferson Avenue while disqualified from operating a car. Sudge H. Weitzel also suspended Berkley’s licence for one year. Berkley wil! be considered for the electronic monitoring system. Photo submitted WEST VANCOUVER Police drug squad members hit pay dirt when they searched a West Vancouver house and found 409 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $400,000. WV police make seizure A WEST Vancouver resident has been charged with two drug- related offences after West Van- couver Police drug section members, armed with a search warrant, entered the man’s Millstream Road house. The police subsequently found a large-scale marijuana operation, and seized 409 marijuana plants in various stages of growth. The estimated street value of the narcotics is over $400,000. Also seized from the house was about $15,000 worth of electrical growing apparatus. James Donald Cripps, 58, has been charged with one count of possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking and one count of cultivating a narcotic. He was arrested when he arriv- ed home on Aug. 19. Cripps ap- peared in West Vancouver provin- cial court on Aug. 20 and was remanded in custody pending a trial. mi NL Dollarton Highway upgrading project completed THE $6.4-million Dollarton Highway Upgrading Project was officially completed Monday dur- ing a ceremony attended by Transportation and Highways Minister Lyall Hanson and North Vancouver District Mayor Murray Dykeman at 4420 Gallant Ave. The capital cost of the two-year upgrading project was paid for by the provincial transportation and highways ministry. Responsibility for the road’s maintenance will now be taken over by North Vancouver District. Hanson said he often travelled along Dollarton Highway when he lived in North Vancouver, “i's an important project for this community and it is now safer and more enjoyable to drive,” said Hanson. ‘This project was completed two months ahead of schedule. | know during the cun- struction project there have een delays."'
