Youth activist looks into Philippine dumping IRWIN OOSTINDIE has his suspicions. He’s heard evidence that a Vancouver mining consor- tium has been dumping toxic min- ing trailings into the harbor of the Philippine island of Marinduque. By Evelyn Jacob News Reporter The North Vancouver youth ac- tivist leaves today on a four-month tour of the Philippines to in- vestigate and document on video what he sees as the consortium’s unethical business practices. ‘ Oostindie, 23, says the company has repeatedly violated Philippine environmental regulations by dumping waste into the local har- bor — an act he believes has destroyed an entire fishing com- munity. He first heard about the consor- tium’s practices five months ago from an Ottawa-based journalist who revealed that the consortium has been ignoring environmental laws since 1987. But such investigations are not new to Oostindie. Last year he smuggted photographs of Tiananmen Square out of China shortly after the mas- sacre; the same year he documented on film the North Korean student uprising. During his four-month journey to the Philippines Oostindie aiso hopes to interview student leaders and activists in Manila for a video he plans to produce on the Filipi- no student movement. “1 want to show students in the Western world the potential of students movements,’’ says Oostindie. ‘‘Students there are active in the ‘social struggie, whereas North American students are mostly involved for their own personal gain.” TASO'S Great all dishes $825 Restaurant served with salad and gariic bread 9.95 984-3337 | B.C.
