MAILBOCx Environmentalists, loggers can Dear Editor: In his letter to the editor _ published Dec. 17, Lou Lepine states that ‘‘the Western Canada Wilderness Committee wants to stop all coastal logging.’’ This statement is Mr. Lepifie’s own fabrication and in no way repre- sents the position of the WCWC. . Our organization believes in responsible forest management coupled with the preservation of outstanding and representative wilderness forests such as the Carmanah and Stein valleys for recreational, scientific, tourism and other nen-consumptive uses. Further suggestions that en- vironmentalists think nothing of spiking trees and endangering the lives of forest industry workers are shocking generalizations based on isolated acts of eco-terrorism by a few irresponsible individuals. The WCWC in particular has made it very clear that such illegal tactics are totally unacceptable (and ineffective), and we are prepared te defend our society from accusations of such acts through legal action. The WCWC is dedicated to preserving wilderness and improving forestry practices through public education. Other letters published in the same issue of the News also con- tain inaccurate portrayals of the environmental movement as an “urban phenomena. In reality, many of our. members are from tural areas, often those directly af- fected by the issues, and are also involved in community-based en- vironmental groups. ~ The authors of the various fet- ters seem to have substituted hard facts with much unwarranted criti- cism of those who truly care about the future of our province's forest resource. It is precisely these types of false allegations that promote fear and hard feelings in industry workers who justifiably fear for their jobs. It is high time, however, to stop pointing the finger at those seeking solutions, and zero in on the real causes of the current forestry NVD Ald.
