That’s the message she and Metropolis Dance delivered to the Stein Valley Voices for the Wilderness Festival this month. The art of social change FRITZ LANG'S classic sci-fi film Metropolis had a profound effect on Christine Elsey, one that she would constantly relive in her mind. Heb JACOB A spectacle of the year 2,000, Lang’s dark portrayal of social confiict and urban alienation was a shocking reminder to Elsey of how industrialization is raping modern man of his values. Lang’s message is one that Elsey continually strives to express through dance. EVELYN spotlight feature “Somewhere deep inside me I'm fighting that (human aliena- tion),” says Elsey, co-founder of Metropolis Dance Company, a three-member collective based in North Vancouver. “That’s the message I’m trying to put out.’ The Stein Valley Festival recently provided a unique forum for her mi essage. In a dance called The Cave, a VANCOUVER WELSH MEN’S CHOIR Robin Thomas work inspired by a Stein Valley spirit cave, Elsey and dancer Monica McLean don feather bird masks and dance with exquisitely intimate movements to a spooky mixture of Latin American and modern electronic music. Two white peuple frustrated by the modern world seek refuge in a cave where they gain deeper knowledge of themselves. - In another newer work, tnner City, Elsey expands on the themes presented in The Cave. The story takes place at an ex- cavation site in the middle of a buzzing city. Two aging street women loitering around the site experience all of life’s struggles — joy, pain and despair. “t's life stripped down to its elements,” explains Elsey. “There's no padding at that level.” After the festival, Chief Fraser Andrew of the Mt.
