FOLD FORWARD

AEROSTAR, FORD’S
aerodynamically-styled compact
van, gets longer for 1989, with ex-
tended-length van and passenger
wagons available for the first time.

New models will Se available in
late fall, with 39] mm (15.4 inches)
of additional room behind the rear
wheels, and an extra 792 litres (28
cubic feet) of cargo volume. That’s
enough space to store standard-
sized luggage behind the third-row
seat in the Aerostar wagon or to
flat load 1,219mm x 2,438mm
(4°x8’) materials in the van.

Other running changes during
the model year will include second-
and third-row bench seatbacks that
fold forward and lie flat against
the seat cushion to form a flat load
area without having to remove the
seats in wagons.

Also added are ‘driver-friendly’
improvements such as redesigned
quick-release mechanisms and
finger indentations in the rear seat
cushions that make it easier to
remove the seats when more space
is needed for hauling.

For added convenience, the
right-hand rear seat that is part of
the Quad captain’s chairs option
tilts forward and out of the way
for easy access to the third-row
bench seat. Extended length wagon
models also have improved second-
and third-row leg room and third-
tow head room.

Other 1989 Aerostar improve-
ments include a new 79-litre (17.5
Imp. gal.) gas tank, replacing a
64-litre (14 Imp. gal.) tank, for
