Photo submitted George stands North Van resident graduates from nurse refresher program JENNIFER CAROL Symons of North Vancouver has successfully completed the Graduate Nurse Refresher program offered by the Open College, part of the Open Learning Agency of B.C. After being away from the field of nursing for some time, Symons enrolled in the open learning program which allowed her to study at home and at a clinical agency in the region. The full-time Graduate Nurse Refresher program was designed to prepare nurses like Symons to re- enter nursing employment with confidence and to provide the skills to keep pace with ongoing changes in nursing. Her studies began with a month-long prerequisite review followed by new course material based on a_ self-care model of nursing practice. She completed her home-study lessons with the help of a nursing tutor available via toll-free telephone. Two months of clinical experience to augment the home study periods and a final exam rounded out the program. The Open College, part of the Open Learning Agency recently created by the provincial gov- ernment, offers career, technical and vocational training to people in B.C. through open learning methods. The Open Learning Agency continues the work of the former Open Learning Institute and the Knowledge Network. The Open College offers some 180 accredited courses to those wishing to learn at home.
