Oo - Sunday, March 27, 1984 - North Shore News in Capilano-Howe Sound INSIGHTS ary is still their girl THE CORONATION TOOK PLACE as scheduled. When the federal election is called (likely this fall), the Tory candidate for one-third of North Van, all of West Van, Howe Sound and points north will again be Mary Collins, MP. Braviung Wednesday night’s rain, some 70 of the faithful turn- ed up at the PC nomination meeting in Gleneagles Golf Club for the revised riding of Capilano- Howe Sound. They found Mary the sole contender. In just 90 seconds she was formally nominated by acclamation. Onlookers had criticized the almost impossibly short cight-day notice allowed to any would-be challengers by riding president John Lakes. But no sign of unhappiness on that score emerg- ed from Wednesday’s registered riding voters. They were Mary’s lambs all the way — presumably (the thought cannot be escaped) because nobody felt capable of doing any better. The mere act of jetting once and sometimes twice a weck between Vancouver and Ottawa to plead the interests of your constituents — Mary's fre- quent schedule — is the stuff heroes and heroines are made of. Thanking her supporters, Mary delivered her standard eulogy of PC achievements in foreign policy, social justice, revival of the economy, relations with the provinces, Mecch Lake and free trade opportunities. There follow- ed a few polite, friendly questions before she wound up by calling on her listeners 10 make the next election campaign ‘“‘fun’’. To judge by the closing ap- plause, the family gathering liked that idea a lot. ¢ s @ COLOR US MILITARY, North and West Van, that is. In the face of its rising costs, its enormous deficit and its diminishing service, the Crown corporation has stripped the public of yet another convenience. As of May 1, the 987 post office box users in North Vancouver will no longer be able to access their mail outside of regular Canada Post working hours. This restriction is being implemented after users have been able to access the boxes 24 hours a day, seven days a week — a service they pay for and expect. Many small business owners depending on a post office box for commercial use and daytime workers using the boxes for personai needs are unable to get to the post office during regular working hours, voiding the convenience the boxes have provided. | The post office claims the reason for closing down the lock boxes is because of increased vandalism to the lobby. If this is the case (although one user who has had a box at the North Vancouver outlet since 1973 says he has never encountered any vandalism pro- blems), then surely Canada Post could overcome such an obstacle by beefing up their security measures. The only peopie who sliould have access to the lobby should be mailbox users. And a surveillance camera could monitor their comings and goings. In this age of 24-hour bank machines, and with private enterprise offering 24-hour post office box mailing services, Canada Post should either deliver — or get out of business.
