Not too late to plant buibs ALTHOUGH WINTER weather has set in, it may not be too late to plant bulbs for next spring. All you need is a spot in ‘the garden where the soil is not frozen: (perhaps under mulch or a pile of leaves or near the basement foun- dation) or a short period of thaw. In fact, late planting may some- times be beneficial because the bulbs will begin growing more The brightly colored amaryllis is another scautiful bulb that flowers with no special care. Just cut off the flowering stem when blooming eer slowly, making them less likely to | : sprout in a January thaw. In most cases though, late plan- tings are not done on purpose but tather because there was not time to do so earlier in the year. Simply plant the bulbs as you would have done in October, watering them well to start their underground growth. Then cover them with a thick covering of mulch to prevent the frost from heaving them out of the ground. Come spring, they will bloom beautifully, if perhaps a week or so later than bulbs planted earlier in the fall. Of course, this is also the ideal season for forcing bulbs indoors. For the simplest possible forcing, specially prepared hyacinths are available. They don’t need a long period of cold like most other bulbs and will reach blooming size very quickly if simply kept in a cool closet after planting. In fact, they don’t even need soil and are often sold in clear containers that allow you to grow them in water. You’ll know they are ready to force when the growing tip is seven em (three inches) long and you can feel the flower buds develop within. Put them into a sunny spot and they will soon be in bloom. This figure includes costs for a simple painting or wallpapering job all the way up to an over $25,000 total redo. Many of these kitchens slated for renovation are 15 years of age or older. They are usually small and were originally designed to in- corporate just the basics ... a range and refrigerator and, if you were lucky, a dishwasher. Both times and personal lifestyles have changed over the last 15 years, and busy families of today want and need the versatile, time-saving features offered by microwave ovens, convection ovens, refrigerators with large freezer sections, and dishwashers with a delay wash option. Trying to squeeze all these mod- ern appliances into a tiny kitchen without knocking down the walls and encountering huge expenses seems almost impossible. “Almost is the key word,’’ says a home economist. ‘‘It can be done with smarter space planning, careful selection of appliances that do more than one thing, and DECORATING? ceases and keep the plant in a sun- ny spot until fall.
