YMICA to hold open house Time to buckle up Buckle Up, 3.C.! This is the logo of ICBC's safety belt: awareness campaien which runs from Aug. 24 through Sept, 14. B.C. police are setting up extra roadside checkpoints to en- force the four-week buckle-up blitz. ICBC hopes to spare you a fine or something worse. The aim of the program is to alert motorists and their passengers to the risk they face on city streets. Accident statistics for 1986 show 75 per cent of all traffic crashes occurred in urban areas. Two- thirds of all personal injury acci- dents happened on city streets, often a short distance from the victim’s home. Research conducted by ICBC shows many people wear safety belts on a long highway trip, but not in town because of low speeds and little risk. But crashing at 50 kilometres per hour while you’re not buckled up is the same as falling from a three-storey building. The instant your car crashes and decelerates, youll effectively weigh several thousand pounds and it is impossible to brace yourself. Three out of four crashes hap- pen within 40 kilometres of home. The majority of serious injuries and deaths occurs in vehicles trav- elling under 60) kilometres per hour. The habit of wearing safety belts is an easy one to acquire. ICBC hopes that if you can remember to use them every day during the three-week ‘‘Buckle Up, B.C.!’’ campaign, you'll establish a routine that could save your life.
