In the second half, the Browns struck early, scoring on a !2-play, 60-yard drive led by their outstan- ding offensive line. Despite several Brown turn- overs, the Broncos were unable to narrow the margin. Each offensive drive fizzled on big plays by th. Browns’ defence or on penalties. Increasingly, the Broncos were forced to go for big plays, which the Browns handled with ease. A last-minute touchdown by the Browns iced the 24-6 victory. Said Paul Lancaster, former Browns coach: ‘‘They played fan- tastic football. No one thought they could win this, but they did.’’ Scott Irvine, the Browns assis- NEC tant coach, summed it up: ‘‘Those kids are really special — they've got tons of heart, and they play as a team — no stars. Correction ~ they’re all stars."* In semi-final action the previous weekend, the Broncos topped the Browns 22-7, The Broncos opened the scoring on a sweep by running back David Shumpka from 25 yards out, with Bronco quarterback Jay Sedgwick adding to the tead by scoring on a 20-yard draw to put the score at 13-0 at the haif. The fired-up Browns scored ear- ly in the second half to make the score 13-7. A Sedgwick punt put the Browns on their own two-yard line, how- ever, and on the ensuing play from scrimmage the Broncos swarming defence sacked the Browns running back in the end zone for a two- point safety, lifting the tead to 15-7. . Late in the game, after some hard hitting by both teams, Sedgwick surprised everyone by throwing a 10-yard pass to end Russell Sinclair, who ran another 15 yards to score.
