SKIPPER Peter Yates seiz- ed the lead early and held on tight to cruise to victory in the 10th annual North Shore News Sailing Race Sunday. By STEPHEN BARRINGTON News Reporter Topping a total of 51 starters, Yates’ 36-foot Baggins crossed the finish line with a winning time of 2:09:13, just 1:18 slower than the record time of 2:07:55. Overcast skies, light to moderate swell and 13-knot winds greeted the racers at West Vancouver’s Dundarave Pier starting line. Ron Huntington, skipper of the committee boat Sultana, called the conditions almost perfect. ‘‘That leaves you enough for skill and enough for boat. You’ve got a re- : ally good day for a race.”” 5 Following the same course as ; last year, racers headed west from Dundarave Pier to a marker just off Lighthouse Park. Passing the first marker, the course turned south across the inlet to the Point Grey bell buoy then into the mid- dle of the harbor before heading to ; the finish line just off Kitsilano * . Navigator in second place. an : Two minutes later Stradivarius aa . skipper Doug Foulds was locked in a close contest with Colophon and Glen Mackenzie’s Kinohi at the first marker. Leaving the turn behind, Kinohi broke ahead with two markers still to go. By the time the boats reached 3 the Point Grey bell buoy, Baggins . ot skipper Yates had stretched his ho, ; lead to a commanding 3% ’ minutes. Bruce Fox’s Andiamo had deftly moved through the pack to slip unexpectedly into third place. Colophon joined the leaders in fourth position. Brisk winds lengthened Baggins’ lead further as B.C. Navigator held strong in second place, two minutes ahead of Andiamo and Colophon. Crossing the finish line with a time of 2:09:13, Baggins was well ahead of B.C. Navigator at 2:21:41.
