The 40-year-old North Shore businessman beat Saskatchewan 18-17 in the first round of the championship’s playoffs, but lost 25-23 to gold medal winner Nova Scotia and lost 18-14 to Alberta in the silver medal game. Fish, who won the 1984 General Motors Gold Cup while playing in Ontario, took up the sport follow- ing a three-year layoff after he read a story in the July 1 News publicizing a lawn bowling cham- pionship hosted by the North Van- couver Lawn Bowling Club. Though pleased with his bronze medal, Fish said, ‘‘! was disap- pointed | didn’t win the gold because [ knew [ could have won it. I missed it by two inches.” Fish, who has played the sport off and on since he was 19, said he would now continue playing and would apply for inclusion on the Canadian national team next year. In addition to Fish’s bronze in the singles event of the champion- ship, North Shore residents Dave Brown and Bob Scullion won a silver medal for B.C. in the pairs category after losing to Saskatchewan in the gold medal game. Nine provinces competed in the national lawn bowling champion- ship. B.C. won the overall team award at the event. Classes are organized by ages and based on six participants per coach. The program is set up to allow gymnasts the opportunity to move through progressions and skills from a beginner to advanced rec- reational level as they are ready and successfully complete program challenges. The competitive arm of the pro- gram falls under the Whip-Its Gymnastic Club. The Whip-Its train both male and female gym- nasts for B.C. level competitions. For further information, contact Penny Erickson at 926-3266. Registration for all programs begins Sept. 12, 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at the recreation centre on 22nd Street.
