Having been a merchant on Lonsdale for 16 years, | have always kept up with the commer- cial development of the North Shore. It was pleasing to see that council took a real interest in the growth and development of the Lonsdale business corridor. Having watched the renovation and expansion of North Shore shopping centres, | found it par- ticularly reassuring to see your ef- fort in revitalizing Lonsdale, especially Lower Lonsdale. With the addition of the Lons- dale Quay, the area has been transformed from a semi-slum to a pleasant, attractive shopping area. More and more merchants and landlords have taken an interest in upgrading their store fronts. But just as momentum towards this positive change has been grow- NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST Young reader worries ing, we find that council may ap- prove the rezoning of the Park and Tilford site to allow a very large shopping complex to be developed there, A’ study has shown the disasterous impact this would bave on the Lonsdale area. In fact, revitalization was originally based on the concept of ‘core’ development. After spending the time, money and energy on revitalizing the Lonsdale area, why would some of the council turn their backs on this area in order to support a plan which would oversaturace North Vancouver with retail floor space? Please don't get me wrong; I'm not afraid of competition. The real problem is that we don’t have the population base to support this additional retail space; nor does the North Shore have a history of drawing shoppers (consistently) from Vancouver. Please consider these factors seriously and let common sense prevail. Alfred Mertin North Vancouver about war possibility Dear Editor: As a 17 year old, I have always been told to prepare for the future, to give my _ best — for some Weil, | have striven to reach my goals but it is so demoralizing whenever day I would be rewarded. I hear reports on how opaque the future is. At age 11, I watched a television program where a man forecast the future. In his forecast, he said that in the coming decade, there would undoubtedly be a nuclear war. This frightened me so, and from that day on, | have lived with the fear of a nuclear holocaust. I could not understand how two people, leaders of nations, could have the ability to decide the outcome of this world. ‘‘it isn’t fair,’’ | used to think. But as I have grown, I have realized that nothing in life is fair. I remember once in grade school during a Remembrance Day Memo- rial, | was reciting to the audience that the teenagers of today have been the most fortunate in Canadian history as to have never seen war. I only pray this ‘‘peace”’ is one to last for years to come and does not resemble the so-called ‘‘peace’’ after the First World War. Carlo Cusanelli North Vancouver AiR B.C.
