overall to maintain and pave roads

But this figure would not include
snow removal costs, flood control,
bridge costs, street cleaning or
traffic control.

The District of West Vancouver
had an overall budget of $200,000.
It spent $123,000 for road
maintenance, and $85,000 was
seperately budgeted for the its pat-
ching crew.

West Van public works manager
Lawrence Scott said there are plans
to upgrade some roads in West
Vancouver this year, but he could
not say which ones until the budget
was approved by council.

COST SHARING

Scott said West Vancouver
received revenue cost-sharing fun-
ding from the federal government
last year to finance a flood control
project on 19th Street, from the
waterfront to Fulton Street.

Nerth Vancouver District ,

recently met with property owners
of Seymour Boulevard to suggest
they participate in a local im-
provement program to repair the
road.

Under this long-standing pro-
gram, property owners contribute
20 to 25 per cent of the road repair
costs, and the municipality pays
the remaining share.

Bremner. said, as’ an example,
between the 800 and 1000 Seymour
block an owner of a 69-foot wide
lot would pay $1,650. This amount

. could’ be paid over a 10-year
“> period.

He said the total cost to the 27

owners in this block would be

$59,200 with the municipality pay-

-» ing $250,950.

“The (local improvement pro-
gram) procedure was established in

. the early ’60s. So many roads have

already been upgraded on a cost-

“sharing basis with residents. It

wouldn’t be fair now to change the
procedure,’”’ Bremner said.
