Feasting on French cuisine

YOU KNOW what I mean by “‘still life,’’ those
enormous, opulent paintings in the gold curlicue

frames that once were

rooms?
The artist would start with

‘a table, sometimes draped

with a rich cloth, sometimes
Starker, and he'd pile on to
it, in voluptuous profusion,
a guitar, a pineapple, a
boar’s: head, or maybe a
deceased goose still in its
feathered dress.

Then he’d add a bottle of
wine, several luscious ripe
peaches, a peacock’s feather,
some very clean stemware to
give him a chance to paint
light, perhaps a half-shell of
glutinous raw oysters, and,
if he had any room left, a
rough country-style loaf of
bread on a board.
