WEST VAN's dangerous dog
bylaw, which allows provin-
cial court judge to order dogs
considered vicious and a
threat to persons destroyed,
passed first reading Monday.

In the proposed byiaw
amendment, council decided
that in order to make the pre-
sent dog regulations more ef-
fective the wording should be
rephrased ‘*‘so a dog may be
ordered killed’? by a court
judge.

Cusrently, the bylaw says
that once a judge had heard
evidence that a dog has killed
or injured a person or
animal, the judge has no
recourse but to ‘‘order the
dog killed in a manner and at
a time specified in the
order,””

Council’s decision to
review the Dog Tax, Kennel
and Pound Bylaw follows a
recent case in West Van in
which @ dog owner suc-
cessfully appealed a court
order to destroy the in-
dividual’s dog.
