Sometimes it’s business, sometimes pleasure (Hey, Barb, why don’t you come with us?’’ says a friend, and u mull it over for all of two seconds before hauling out ryour Suitcase) OR, it can be a family emergency that takes you away. When packing for a long- planned holiday, you've got everything listed and prepared. Not so with the emergency trip. Just in case this ever happens to you, give a thought now to what you’d do “if and when’’. Where do you keep your overnight bag? Unlike your larger, heavy duty suitcase, you should be able to get at it without doing a major mov- ing job in your junk room. If you happened to be real- ly smart, you’d keep it stock- ed with a selection of little packets of travel soap, sham- poo, nail polish remover, kleenex and whatever other paper or cosmetic supplies come in small packages. Of course, it always contains a tiny sewing kit, doesn’t it? Is your News carrier a Star? If you’ve got time, your best first move is to grab a load of laundry and fire it in- to the washing machine. Next, make a list of all those people who will need to know you’ve left town. Your boss is a good place to start - unless he’s the turkey sending you off on this ‘‘mission impossible.”’ travel- wise by Barbara McCreadie If you’re lucky, you can unload the job of making the calls onto a family member. It makes it easier if you keep a personal telephone direc- tory, alphabetically arrang- ed. Aside from ease of fin- ding the numbers, a quick read through it will jog your pemory enough to save omit- htyg someone. on’t forget to read through your appointment book and alert anyone who you must see later in the week - even if you think you will be back in time it’s a good idea to ask them to phone you to confirm on the day of the meeting Who knows? As httle as possible! After all, this is an emergency - not a fashion show. If it’s something grim like a funeral, wear something suitable for the occasion to travel. That way you won’t be stuck if your bag goes to Boston while you wait for it in Belgium. Take along a robe or caftan. It’s been my experience that the emergen- cy traveller spends a lot of sleepless hours agonizing over the events. If the emergency is family related, bet your last dollar that you’ll end up doing something physical like mov- ing personal effects or cook- ing for 20 people. Throw in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. A good friend or family member is indispensible in an emergency. Have someone follow you around with a paper and pen, taking down last minute instructions, while you pack and _ fuss. What do you feed your cat? When were the plants last watered? What day is the gar- bage collected? Cancel the milk. Have a quick look at your fridge and garbage or freeze anything that won’t keep. Milk in cartons freezes well. Combine your perishable fruit and vegies and donate them to a neighbor. Eggs are OK for a couple of weeks - at least they _won’t go foul (sorry!) but butter and cheese should be frozen. If you’ve got a lot of bills that should be paid yester- day, scoop them up and take them with you. It will give you something to do on the plane. The most important thing is quit’ worrying about yourself So what if you didn’t have time to wash your hair or paint your nails? If your best coat ts in the cleaners, wear something else and forget it Don’t agonize over something you haven't done there's always the telephone and people are marvellously understanding in emergencics Now, why am | writing all this? Because as you read it, Pll be 1,000 miles away alten ding to a family problem And, | did everything mght except that | didn’t have a spare travel column tucked away for an emergency!
